Claudia Citkovitz, PhD, L.Ac., is one of the nation’s foremost authorities on Acupuncture for Labor and Delivery as well as stroke recovery and rehabilitation. She is the director of acupuncture services at NYU Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn, NY, where she oversees the delivery of acupuncture therapies and leads acupuncture internships and postgraduate training programs in labor and delivery and neurological rehabilitation for doctoral programs. Her research activities include multiple publications in journals of integrative and conventional medicine.

 

Course Description:
This course provides an introduction to the theory and practice of acupuncture for stroke recovery and rehabilitation. From scalp acupuncture and the traditional Yang Ming treatments to Qing dynasty scholar Wang Qing-Ren and Shi Xue min’s Xing Nao Kai Qiao system (used in the documentary ‘9,000 needles’). Students are trained in the use of a Treatment Manual developed by the instructor and her team, which guides assessment and treatment planning in acute as well as chronic stroke care.

 

Topics that will be covered in this course:
– Introduction to Stroke: Chinese and Western definition, etiology, patient assessment, and treatment prioritization
– Hands-on Tui Na, balance and microsystems in the treatment of stroke
– Additional topics in acute stroke, management of chronic stroke, and stroke prevention
– Hands-on Tui Na, Qigong Practice, and individual lifestyle plan in the treatment, recovery, and prevention of stroke
