Using TCM to Fight COVID-19

Since COVID-19 has gained momentum these past weeks, many are looking for ways to stay healthy, to strengthen their immune systems, and for relief of mild symptoms. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has demonstrated efficacy in helping people get well and stay well, even during epidemics.

Below are some easy suggestions that are safe for most people to use and are readily available as capsules. TCM is customized medicine, and it is best to seek the advice of a licensed practitioner to be sure you are getting the right medicine at the right time.

Staying warm and eating warm-cooked foods means your body can use all of its resources on healing instead of keeping it warm or breaking down the plant material in a cold, raw salad.

Drinking tea is not only comforting but also has proven benefits to strengthening your gut biome with polyphenols. Since 70% of our immune system is in our gut, we want to keep it healthy! If you are a person who runs warm, choose Matcha. If you are a colder type, choose black tea like Pu Erh.

While you are well, as a preventative: Yu Ping Feng San

If you are feeling rundown but aren’t sick:  Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang.

For our TCM students who have an understanding of herbal medicines, consider:

Early Stages: Damp constitution (most Americans): Tongue with a thicker coat, headache, aversion to cold, heaviness and pain in the body, chest oppression, low fever: San Ren Tang with Xiao Chai Hu Tang or Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Tang
