New Tong Ren Tang Education Center and Herbal Store at CIIS

Beijing Tong Ren Tang (TRT), China’s largest and most highly regarded brand of Traditional Chinese Medicine, entered into a three-year educational partnership with ACTCM at CIIS in April 2015 with a pledge of $1,000,000 in support.

The partnership goals are to bring innovations to clinical care, support new Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners, and to advance knowledge in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the US.

A long-term outcome of TRT’s support of TCM education is to establish TCM wellness centers and eventually TCM research and teaching hospitals in the US that are modeled after integrative health institutions in China, Asia, and Europe. The objective is to bring ACTCM at CIIS closer to achieving its vision of being an international center of educational excellence that advances professional collaboration and sustainability in Chinese medicine and health care.

TRT also saw the benefits of ACTCM’s merge with CIIS last summer and endorsed the shared vision of the two organizations by pledging the next two years of their partnership as a $660,000 corporate grant fund to CIIS and allocating $270,000 to establish the Tong Ren Tang Education Center and Herbal Store on the first floor of CIIS’s Mission Street home. To mark the inauguration of the ACTCM at CIIS and TRT partnership we will hold a grand opening of the new Tong Ren Tang Education Center and Herbal Store on September 30th at 11:30 AM.

Following the opening of the TRT Herbal Store and Education Center, TRT and ACTCM at CIIS will also join forces in presenting the “New Paradigms in Integrative Medicine Conference” on October 8-9th at the Hotel Kabuki in San Francisco. The conference will bring health professionals together from across the US to focus on reconciling scientific research and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In addition to the store renovations, and conference support, ACTCM at CIIS and TRT are launching the first graduate training program of its kind to support recent graduates as they transition from students to full-time practitioners. TCM graduates take an average of five years to establish a full-time private practice. Now these newly licensed practitioners will have access to formal mentorship and collaborative case management by ACTCM at CIIS faculty in TRT clinics. This pioneering program will reinforce the partnership’s long-term goal to provide a workforce pipeline of integrative health-care practitioners.

Beijing Tong Ren Tang was founded in 1669 during the 8th year of Emperor Kangxi’s reign in the Qing Dynasty. Beginning in 1723, for the next 188 years TRT was designated to provide medicines for the royal pharmacy of the imperial palace of the Qing Dynasty for eight generations of Qing emperors. It was among the first to be designated a Chinese cultural heritage brand by the People’s Republic of China and is one of the best-known brands in China.

Ding Yong Ling, CEO and executive director, Beijing Tong Ren Tang Chinese Medicine Co. Ltd, has said about the partnership, “We are pleased to cooperate with ACTCM at CIIS to promote the culture of Chinese medicine in the United States and to educate and train Chinese medical practitioners.” Ding Yong Ling will be giving a short speech at the grand opening celebration this Friday.
