COMMUNITY ACUPUNCTURE PROGRAM (CAP)

The College operates several acupuncture programs at community health care facilities throughout San Francisco. CAP sites provide ACTCM clinic interns access to the entire medical chart of the patient, so they can see how other health care providers treat the same patient. These experiences enable interns to acquire a sense of how to implement integrated health care, a model promoted by ACTCM.

The primary goal of CAP is to provide high-quality clinical care and patient education, using the modalities of traditional Chinese medicine. This program provides educational clinical opportunities for ACTCM students in treating diverse populations. Completing clinic hours at different facilities allows students to work with several health care providers and see a greater variety of patients.

The following is a list of current CAP and off-site facilities:

Located at the Davies campus in the Duboce Park neighborhood of San Francisco, CPMC offers interns the opportunity to treat patients who are paralyzed or have limited mobility due to stroke or other injury to the brain or spine. Medical doctors refer patients for acupuncture to help issues surrounding pain management, rehabilitation, speech therapy, motor coordination, muscle tone and weakness, depression and anxiety.

Rotations at CPMC take place three afternoons per week. Because of the limited mobility of many patients and the lack of access to back points, interns learn to utilize scalp and auricular acupuncture.

Because of the nature of cerebral and spinal injuries, many patients can be seen for consecutive weeks and months as they receive rehab therapy. This allows interns to establish a long-term treatment plan and see the results of their treatment over time. CPMC also provides an opportunity for students to learn about the treatment stroke with acupuncture and Western medicine, and the treatment of patients in a collaborative hospital setting.

This CAP site provides acupuncture services only to patients admitted to the hospital in the Inpatient Acute Rehabilitation Unit at California Pacific Regional Rehabilitation Center.
